    I read a lot of lesser known books too, that not only have little reviews on Goodreads, but on the Dutch bookish platform Hebban as well lol. Though sometimes it has more reviews on Hebban than on GR. It's mainly because I do a lot of secondhand shopping and working together with smaller Dutch presses. Out of the 31 books I've read this year so far, 14 have under 200 ratings on GR 😅

      That’s so pretty epic stats! The best I ever managed was a book that had only 6 ratings on Goodreads. It has more now but it felt pretty cool at the time.

    I use Goodreads to track my reading and TBR, but I don't use it much for looking at reviews. Occasionally I will if I think there may be trigger warnings, for example, but mostly it's just a way to track my own reading. I used to use a reading journal, too, but that went into storage and it took a year to find a new home, so I've only just found it while unpacking in the last couple of weeks. :)

      If a book is bothering me with a specific feature or style I look at the reviews to see if others agree and if it’s gonna get better or maybe I should walk away. But yes I use Goodreads a lot for tracking reading and keeping track of what books I’m interested in.

    I knew I could rely on your channel Emma. I just started "Difficult Women" by Roxane Gay and wanted to check if you had read her books. I am enjoying the short story collection. Not sure I am up for the other recs, "The handmaid's tale" provided enough anxiety for me. Roxane's books seem to be about the woman condition, trauma, more than speculative dystopian fiction. Sadly not too far fetched however. Just hearing the summary about Vox made me cringe. Also, I'd never make it :) Thanks for the warning about "An Untamed State". I think I'll still try it eventually. Many thanks. 📚🤓🙋‍♀

    (This is such a long comment - I'm so sorry but you asked about something that I've been deep down the research rabbit hole about) You definitely need to read The Big Reveal by Sasha Velour! I say this bc you asked about Ru girls with books but it's honestly amazing (it was one of my favorite books last year). It's a mix of memoir, drag history, and art philosophy, and has a bit of a multimedia element with art and photography. I read it alongside Trans Warriors by Leslie Feinberg which is trans history with some memoir and political philosophy. They worked amazing together on so many levels so I can't not mention it. (I'm trying so hard not to write a whole essay in the comment, but trust that you should read them both) Other folks from RPDR have books too, but the only other one I've read is Alaska's memoir which is a cool read as a fan and some perspective on the scene but it's very much written in her voice, which I thought was fun but might not be for everyone. I have Gotmik's book that's more of about being trans and has multiple authors but I haven't read it yet. I have books from some others too, but a lot of them are more humor/lifestyle hybrids (like Trixie & Katya's and Willams. Ginger Minj's is a cookbook) and I haven't looked too much at them yet (except Willam's which I did start and... the humor is more rough than I expected given the pub date, so I would not recommend it unless you're really invested.) I think Courtney Act has a memoir and Bianca Del Rio has a humor essay type book as well. Really the one I'm most excited to get/read is the oral history that they put out about the first decade of RPDR.

    • @ACupOfBooks
      @ACupOfBooks 2 місяці тому

      The Sasha Velour one sounds good. I probably won't do too many memoirs just because I can find they become a bit samey. But art history and art philosophy added into it sounds fun. And a big history of RPDG would be very cool! Thank you for all the detail in your comment :)

    Great reviews. Loved the "horns" surprise in the sci fi book review. Life Changing sounds like something I need to look up and see if I can find over here. I just finished The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ozeki. Love the Buddhism grounding that centers her stories. very good. Also reading News of the Dead which is a strange fiction set in norther Scotland--slow going. Love hearing about the art books. I was reading several books for the Booktube prize so didn't get to join in on Spring-a-thon. Best of my group was House of Doors by Eng and Enter Ghost by Isabella Hammad. Both were excellent reads. Enter Ghost give a great bit of history of Palestine in the story though it is mostly between the lines. Great book.

      The Booktube prize looks like it has some great stuff on it this year. Glad to hear you’ve enjoyed them. And we love some strange fiction!

      It’s a perfect pick for pride month most definitely! My June reading is going really well. I’ve started Jane Eyre on audiobook and really enjoying it so far.

    You should check out Scarthins bookshop in Cromford and Scriveners in Buxton (both in Derbyshire) They are both, by th 10:16 e sound of it, similar to Toppings. They sell both new and second hand books and Scarthins has a coffee shop too! Could spend a whole day there.......

    Loved your answers haha. I have a couple good ones for some but not much for others. I'm giving props to the animal book guy only referring to them by their taxonomic binomial. Probably the most pretentious but goofy thing I've heard in a while that I'd probably find funny in person haha. Great vid Emma

    A circus performer and a former bookseller! Fun! The strangest places I've ever bought a book have been from a 1 euro per book box in front of a laundromat, and a 100 yen per book on a shelf in front of a porn store.

      Yeah my CV is very strange. Laundromat and porn store may have juggling convention at least tied for weird place XD

    Can't believe you mentioned Topping and Company in Edinburgh. i just traveled to Scotland from U.S. just to go to this store, well not just also for a hike but it was at the top of my list.. It was well worth the trip and I spent most of the evening and then an afternoon just reading off the shelves and buying. I live in the Northeast in the U.S and love going to the old Book barns that are in this area. There are several in Connecticut and around Boston. Big old barns with uneven wood floors and used, ancient and sometimes a few new books scattered in everywhere. They are great fun to explore and I always come out with strange books I never remember why I bought. Also they have the strangest people working in them but they do know books. Don't know how they stand all the dust. Loved this video and your answers.

      It’s such a good bookshop! The one is Ely is smaller but also lovely. A book barn sounds amazing!

    Our town doesn’t have a bookshop. The nearest one is 80 miles away. There is one charity shop that sells books but it’s not in town centre and in a weird little unit on the outskirts. However I’m always found great books on the few occasions I’ve got there.

    Hi Emma, I watched this as I am into the post apocalyptic/dystopian genre and because I’m also going through my romance genre phase, I’m reading “Homestead” by Claire Kent and wow it’s hard to put down! If you’re ever inclined I recommend it since I know you enjoy romance as well. Thank you for this. I now have additional books to consider when I’m up for a cozy :) dystopian read! 📚❤️‍🔥💀🎴
